Story

Over 300 Harvard undergraduates virtually gathered on Saturday, May 30th, in the wake of what has become a historic moment in the American consciousness. In an attempt to reconcile and remember the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade, Harvard students across the undergraduate arts community banded together for a few precious hours. In those moments, a virtual healing space was rendered – students sang, told stories, and gave one another collective peace.

The mission of the event was and is simple. Students wanted to donate specifically to the following groups: Black Visions Collective (which develops Minnesota’s emerging Black leadership to lead powerful campaigns, implementing transformative justice principles), Reclaim the Block (an advocacy group for moving money from the police department into other areas of the city’s budget that promote community health and safety), and Louisville Bail Fund (a bail-out fund for folks that provides post-release support and focuses on preventative measures for those targeted by law enforcement and threatened with incarceration).

Through a collection of mainly small donations, the average being $16, students raised a grand total of $14,000.

We would like to offer the opportunity for Harvard University Faculty to declare a similar commitment. It is our ask that you match the collective total of the event, raising the final total to $28,000. This gift-match would be to the benefit of the Harvard community and the larger public. We truly hope you consider financially matching the tireless efforts of our Harvard undergraduate community.

We use GiveButter to keep track of funds raised, but you can also donate directly using the links above.
